From the history of the Akmola province: causes and consequences of famine in the early 1920-ies

Abstract

The article discusses the policy of «military communism» carried out by the Soviet authorities as the main cause of the famine in the Akmola province in the 20 th years of the XX century. The practical embodiment of this policy is analyzed and the plight of the province is characterized. It is noted that the food crisis, the continuous pumping of bread and the influx of starving refugees exacerbated the poor situation of the province. On the basis of archival data, the total number of hungry people in the counties of Akmola province is given. The author came to the conclusion that the fact of the famine in the province was manifested on a large scale, but the Akmola province with the uyezds was never recognized as starving.
