The article deals with the issues of historical geography, including hydronyms and hydrography of lakes of Kazakhstan. Scientific discoveries and analyses written by Academician V.V. Bartold about large lakes of Kazakhstan based on Arab-Persian data using various ancient and Chinese records of antiquity, the Middle
Ages, are supplemented by modern toponymic, geographical, historical scientific reasoning. From a scientific point of view, the works of the scientist remain relevant. That is, the study of the historical and geographical problems of Kazakhstan reflects the value of the academician’s scientific heritage. The historical and geographical analysis of the scientist’s judgments about the lakes of Kazakhstan is relevant to this article. In conclusion, it is emphasized that the study of the academician’s scientific heritage opens up opportunities for the formation of the geographical position of Kazakhstan in historical times.
