Theoretical interpretation of the concept of «mediation»

Abstract

Being one of the means for the global resolution of conflicts between states, mediation plays an important
role in the settlement of international conflicts. Mediation, as a way of resolving the conflict, was mentioned in ancient times. With the subsequent development of mankind, mediation became an increasingly popular measure. The article identifies five main functions performed by the mediator, and the most important task is  to create conditions for discussing the problem existing between the parties to the conflict. The stages and classification of types of mediation activities with the participation of third parties - states, as well as intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations acting as mediators - the UN, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the Organization of American States are considered. Examples are given of participation in the settlement of conflicts by states and non-governmental organizations. Since the XX century. new principles, methods and conditions are being formed that help the third party resolve conflicts. The authors consider the process of «mediation» as one of the forms of conflict resolution, determine the correlation and interrelation of the concepts «mediation» and «mediation» analyze certain definitions of mediation.
