Abstract

The article reviews historical sources from the archives of Kazakhstan and Russia in the period from the
XVIII till early XX century. This were named the main types of sources that underlie the analysis of the history of Kazakhstan within the Russian Empire. The great interest are the materials of the Russian State Historical Archive, the Russian State Military Historical Archive, the Central State Archives of the Republic of
Kazakhstan, the results of scientific expeditions of Russian travelers, land use materials, census documents, pre-revolutionary periodicals, reports of statistical committees that were formed in regions of Kazakhstan. The authors of the article proposed to consider the issues of the history of Kazakhstan through the prism of actual data, as well as on the basis of journalistic and scientific materials, information obtained from eyewitnesses, travelers, tsarist and local officials of that time. The questions of the history of Kazakhstan within the Russian Empire cause a lot of controversy, discussions, disagreements for a long time. To give answers to many questions that concern not a single generation of historians, scientists and the public allow a large number of Russian sources that were published in different periods or stored in the archives of Russia and Kazakhstan.
