A whole era of the history of Kazakhstan is associated with the name of Uali Khan, the successor of Ablay
Khan. He became the last ruler of the Middle Zhuz, officially recognized by both the Russian Empire and
Qing dynasty. Uali Khan is of great interest as a prominent historical figure. Unfortunately, at present, the life and work of Uali Khan in the available scientific literature is reflected only in individual episodes and fragments. All known works about him are episodic, fragmentary, and to a greater extent — of an article character. This problem is poorly studied in domestic historical science. Therefore, this problem requires further basic research. In this article, the authors attempted to study some aspects of the life and work of Uali Khan, relying on new archival sources. Among the scholars of our country, the prevailing opinion is the personal weakness and incompetence of the last Khan of the Middle Zhuz, allegedly he was not able to show leadership and military qualities, the virtuosity of a speaker and diplomat. However, some little-known facts from the life of Uali allow us to see a not so unified plan of the ruler. In this article, the authors attempted to revise and supplement some aspects of the life and work of Uali Khan, relying on new archival sources. The previously known small data on this historical figure are reviewed in connection with the discovery and study of new historical sources. As sources, the authors used archival materials, including declassified in 2018–2019.
