Illustrative materials in history textbooks: their characteristics and analysis

Abstract

The article notes that one of the most pressing problems in modern society is the formation of historical memory, to what extent historical places become “places of memory”. The emphasis is made on the analysis of the used illustrative materials in the textbooks “History” from the middle of the XX century and the beginning of the XXI century. A general overview of the use of visual aids in the educational process at school is presented. The article examines the practice of teaching the subject “History” in the 40s of the twentieth century based on archival documents. Besides, the study analyzes the illustrative materials used in textbooks on the history of the middle of the 20th century and the 21st century, reveals their similarities and differences. The author examines examples of the use of the visual method in the presentation of illustrative materials and draws attention to the difference between illustrative materials in textbooks on the subject of “History” of the mid-twentieth century and the twenty-first century.
