The article presents the life path and legacy of a typical native of peasants, a representative of the first generation of the Soviet intelligentsia, a specialist in the history of Bashkortostan and a participant in the Great Patriotic War R.U. Kuzyev. It demonstrates his contribution to the development of culture, education and historical science; gives a brief overview of his scientific and social activities. The study uses materials from the National Archives of the Republic of Bashkortostan (official documents and personal correspondence). His biography is closely connected to the Soviet period of Russian history and the development of the Bashkir Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (BASSR) (social, cultural, and educational) in the 1920–1970. The materials introduced into scientific circulation are sources of factual information, complementing the picture of the formation of a Soviet intellectual of peasant origin and joining the Komsomol, the first publications in the periodical press of Soviet Bashkortostan and ending with activities as a senior research fellow. The results show that, despite the career growth during the period of repression and persecution of writers and playwrights, the deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the BASSR and the head of the Arts Department defended the honor of the illegally convicted, urged officials not to impose the organization of socially significant voluntary work on the shoulders of individuals and international organizations, and participated in the development of his native village.
