Soviet periodicals as a reflection of ideology in respect of childhood (on the materials of the magazine “Baldyrgan”)

Abstract

Historical research on childhood in Kazakhstan analyzes and comprehends various phenomena. One such topic is the influence of the periodical press on the upbringing of the younger generation in the Soviet period. The influence of the Soviet children's media was enormous. It had to solve a number of problems, such as the involvement of children in the Pioneer and Komsomol organizations, execution of ideological settings of the country's leadership, serving the ideas of the Communist Party. The aim of the article: to investigate the editorial policy and the ideological and thematic content of the children's magazine “Baldyrgan”, which reflected all the main ideological trends of the study period and was a product of its era. The chronological framework covers the 60s of the twentieth century. Results. Thanks to the “Thaw”, children's print production is moving away from Soviet ideological influence to general cultural influence. The article examines the editorial policy, editorial board and staff, the relationship between the magazine and the target audience, genre and composition features of the information. Analyzing the content of the magazine, we conclude that the magazine “Baldyrgan” affordably explained to the younger generation how to “properly” behave in the Soviet society, helped to learn the basic moral values, sought to satisfy children's curiosity. Remaining under the influence of communist ideology, “Baldyrgan” magazine, thanks to its creative editorial board, sought to familiarize children with humanistic
values in a universal sense.
